What is a Months Since Calculator?

A Months Since Calculator tells you how many complete calendar months have elapsed since a specific past date. Unlike simply counting days, this tool accounts for the variable lengths of months — giving you an answer in the natural unit of months plus remaining days.

This is especially useful for tracking durations that naturally span months, such as a lease agreement, a subscription, a project timeline, or how long since a medical procedure. Months are a meaningful unit of time in everyday life, and this calculator lets you work with them precisely.

Example: picking March 1, 2023 about 37 months (plus a few days) — the tool rounds to complete calendar months and shows the remainder separately.

How to Use the Months Since Calculator

Select the past date from the date picker and click Calculate Months Since. The result displays the number of complete calendar months elapsed and the remaining days beyond those whole months. The total day count is also shown for reference.

Use the quick-select buttons for common timeframes. Or enter any specific date — a birthday, an anniversary, the start of a subscription, or any event you want to measure from.

How Calendar Months Are Calculated

A "calendar month" starts on a given day-of-month and ends the day before the same day-of-month the following month. For example, from March 15 to April 15 is exactly one calendar month, regardless of how many days are in March or April.

This calculator counts complete calendar months by comparing the month and day of the start date to today's month and day. If today's day-of-month is less than the start day-of-month, the current month is not yet complete and is not counted. The remaining days are shown separately.

February's 28 or 29 days (depending on whether it is a leap year) are handled automatically when computing complete months. For a day-count approach, see our Days Since Calculator. For the age expressed in years and months, try our Age Calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many months since January 1, 2023?

Enter January 1, 2023 into the calculator to get the exact answer. As a reference, from January 1, 2023 to January 1, 2024 is exactly 12 months. From January 1, 2023 to March 28, 2026 is 38 months and 27 days. The calculator handles all these variations automatically.

How do I calculate months between two dates?

To calculate months between two dates, count how many times you cross from one calendar month to another going from the start date to the end date. Since months have different lengths (28 to 31 days), you must account for the day-of-month to determine whether the final month is complete. This calculator does that automatically.

How many months in a year?

There are 12 months in a year. January, March, May, July, August, October, and December each have 31 days. April, June, September, and November each have 30 days. February has 28 days in standard years and 29 in leap years.

How many months since I was born?

Enter your birth date to find out. For reference: a 10-year-old is 120 months old, a 25-year-old is 300 months old, a 40-year-old is 480 months old, and a 65-year-old is 780 months old. The exact number depends on the current date relative to your birthday each year.

Is 6 months the same as half a year?

Six calendar months is approximately half a year, but not exactly the same number of days every time. January through June totals 181 days; July through December totals 184 days. Half of 365 days is 182.5 days. So "6 months" and "half a year" are close but not precisely equal.

What is the difference between months since and age in months?

"Months since" counts complete calendar months from a past date to today. "Age in months" means the same thing when applied to a birth date. For a child's age, doctors typically use age in months until the child is 24 months old. After that, age is expressed in years.
