How Calendar Years Are Calculated
A complete calendar year from a given date runs until the same month and day arrives the following year. For example, from March 15, 2020 to March 15, 2026 is exactly 6 years. From March 15, 2020 to March 1, 2026 is 5 years and some months — because the March anniversary hasn't happened yet in 2026.
This calculator correctly handles leap years. A person born on February 29 in a leap year has their anniversary on February 28 (or March 1, depending on convention) in non-leap years. We use February 28 as the cutoff for leap-day birthdays.
